Understanding Your Audience
Same project, four different presentations.
Who is in the room decides what you say
A technical audience (engineers, pilots, GIS analysts) wants methods, accuracy and limits. A nontechnical audience (a homeowner, a principal) wants what it means for them. An academic audience wants your question, method and evidence. An industry audience — a client or employer — wants results, cost, schedule, risk and whether they can trust you.
Before you design a single slide, write one sentence: “This audience needs to leave knowing ___ so they can ___.”
- ▸Jargon isn't wrong — unexplained jargon is. Define GSD, RTK or orthomosaic the first time for anyone outside the field.
- ▸Ask: what decision is this audience making? Build toward it.
