Public Speaking

Pace, pauses and presence.

Your voice is part of the evidence

Most listeners follow 130–170 words per minute comfortably. Faster sounds nervous; slower sounds like reading.

Pause after every important number. Silence feels long to you and normal to them.

Posture: feet planted, shoulders open, face the audience, not the screen. Eye contact: one person per sentence, then move on.

Fillers (“um”, “like”, “basically”) aren't a crime, but a lot of them hide your point.

Find your pace

Press Start, read the passage out loud at a natural speaking pace, and press Stop. Aim for 130–170 words per minute.

Good morning. This week we mapped the east wing of the school addition for Mountain West Builders. We flew the same grid as weeks one and two, at two hundred feet, so the maps line up exactly. Here is what changed. The slab is complete. All eighteen level-one columns are standing. The level-two deck is about half placed, and that number is preliminary because the crane blocked part of our view. Our recommendation is to keep the next flight on Friday, and to fly the east lines during the crane's lunch stand-down so we can confirm the deck progress. We need your approval for that flight window today. After that, I'm happy to take your questions.
